She piles them on her plate expertly: lining
the bottom with lettuce, weighing them down
with tomato slices. Next the mushrooms, carrot sticks
and celery; sprinkle on the corn,
peas and sprouts.

The salad mountain wobbles as she pours
the thousand island sauce over and around;
she adds the raisins, grated cheese
and bread bits evenly, over
and around.

Then waiter brings out the onion rings.

She frowns.

If I hurry,
I might just make it back
and there’ll still be some left for me.
Of course I can wait
for the second serving,
but what if this is the last?
I simply can’t miss out.

She zips back to her table and puts
the mountain down. She returns and takes
an empty plate, and since she’s on her way:
a helping of whatever she has missed
on her first time round.
