• Name meanings

“Renji” means “range” which is most likely a reffernce to his Zanpakutou, Zabimari, which he can use for fighting from a distance once he releases his Zanpakutou. It can also refer on how Renji wants to surpass Byakuya but that Byakuya is too far for him too reach.

• Personality description

Overall, Renji seems to be overly aggressive and violent. He regularly has arguments with Ichigo, which tend to just be empty name-calling about how stupid the other is. But when it really comes down to it Renji is a kind person, he’s one of the most loyal friends someone could have; Renji would not hesitate to risk his live to help his friends out. Although Renji seems to be a person who acts only on his temper he is in fact a deep thinker and will do what is just in the end even if he has to defy his superiours. He’s also very determined once he sets his mind on something which gave Aizen trouble hypnotising Renji completely due to his atitude of relying only on himself.

• Character history

Renji’s history is connected with Rukia. In his childhood Abarai was part of Area 78, Inuzuri, South Alley of flowing spirit. He lived there along with Rukia and few other souls. Although he was very stubborn and trained everyday, Rukia had much more spiritual force what pissed off Renji. Living in Area 78 was very hard because of starvation, diseases and endless problems with water. Such a conditions caused death of Rukia’s and Renji’s friends. After that they both decided to join the Shinigami Academy. Originally, Rukia had shown the most promise as she was able to create bigger balls of energy, but Renji was the one who ended up in the advanced classes. Because they both came from one of the worst districts, they did their best to prove to the rest of the academy that they were just as good. While Renji excelled ahead and became friends with Hinamori Momo and Kira Izuru, Rukia lagged behind and didn't really become friendly with anyone. One day Rukia was taken by Byakuya to his nobble family. Renji had really torn feelings about this but he didn’t stop Rukia from going with Byakuya since he wanted that she could finally be in a family and so he closed his feelings to Rukia. In order to reclaim Rukia, Renji swore that he would surpass Byakuya and show him how strong he was.

When Renji first entered the squads a few years after Rukia, he was first placed in 5th squad under Aizen but was moved because he could have been a problem to Aizen. This is because he didn't want anyone nearby who could find out about his plans. In 11th squad, he became a friend of Ikkaku. When the time finally came that he was strong enough to become a vice-captain he was placed under the command of the 6th squad captain, Byakuya. They received orders to retreive Rukia from the real world since she has been there longer then allowed to, they quickly catch her at night when she was running away from Ichigo’s house so he wouldn’t get involved. Since Rukia hadn’t seen Renji for so long he displayed his power by attacking her but Ishida came in between but was proven to be no match. Then Ichigo arrived but Renji was overwhelming him until Ichigo suddenly boosted his Spirit Energy and gave Renji a serious beating but Byakuya stepped in who quickly made short work of Ichigo. This frustrated Renji since he once again realized how weak he was compared to his captain, they took Rukia back to Soul Society where she would be executed for transfering her Shinigami powers into a human. This came to a shock to Renji since he thought she would only get a minor punishment, but since this wasn’t the case he gets really angry but realizes he can’t go against the rules of Soul Society. When Ichigo breaks into Seireitei, Renji and Ichigo face off once again. The result is the same as their last battle with the exception that Renji isn’t saved from the finishing blow by Byakuya. Before losing consiousness he begs Ichigo to save Rukia since he doesn’t have enough strength himself. While recovering from his injuries he was put into prison by Byakuya for entering a battle and losing, in his cell Renji decided to save Rukia after seeing the resolve in Ichigo’s eye’s. He easily broke out of his cell but realized that he still wasn’t strong enough so he decided to train, while searching a good training spot he found Ichigo and informed him that he’d help and about Rukia’s execution date that would be the next day. He trained seperatly from Ichigo and achieved bankai in his own way.

He then rushed to Soukyou hill where Rukia’s execution would take place. He knocked out everyone who stood in his way until he felt Byakuya’s Spirit Energy. Byakuya asked Renji to stop his foolishness but Renji was determined to get to Rukia even if it meant fighting Byakuya. He was able to proof to Byakuya that he had grown extremely powerfull but still lacked the experience of using his bankai, Renji was deadly wounded by Byakuya’s bankai. He was however rescued by Unohana but this is never explained why, later Hannatorou showed up with Rikichi and healed the last of his wounds and provided him with new clothing since his other Shinigami clothers were torn. When Renji arrived at Soukyou hill, Ichigo had already stopped the execution. He tossed over Rukia (from really high) towards Renji and told him to get her to safety while he would deal with anyone who tried to stop them. Renji managed to escape but was intercepted by 9th squad captain, Tousen, who used a technique who brought them back to Soukyou hill. Aizen and Ichimaru were also there, Renji was suprised to see Aizen since he was assumed dead. Aizen told Renji to leave Rukia but Renji refused which led to an attack of Aizen. Renji got injured and his released Zanpakutou was ripped in pieces, just before Aizen could strike down Renji, Ichigo saved him and Rukia. They realized they couldn’t win but decided to fight together against Aizen nontheless, their combined attack was quickly countered and both Ichigo and Renji got severely injured, Renji lost consiousness so he couldn’t hear the story directly from Aizen. He learned when he got recovered about Aizen’s motives which was to obtain the Hougyoku (Crumbling Treasure). Since Rukia’s execution was just part of Aizen’s plan she was now free to be with the rest of the Shinigami again, while Ichigo and his friends returned to the real world.

After that he went to the real world with Rukia, Ikkaku, Yumichika, 10th squad vice-captain Matsumoto Rangiku, and 10th squad captain Hitsugaya Toushirou to help Ichigo fight the Arrancar. So far he has fought Ilforte Grantz, who was easy to beat once he had removed the limit on his powers. He is staying with Urahara during the operations. In order to gain information about Urahara himself who had put the Hougyoku in Rukia (next to inventing the thing), he has promised to help him with mindless jobs for three months, including helping Chad train. Later when Orihime is kidnapped he and the rest of his group are ordered back to Soul Society.
