• Name meanings

What Hitsugaya means is something I don’t know. Toushirou can be split into two however, “tou” can be a refference to Hitsugaya’s Zanpaktou since it can both mean “sword’ and “be frozen over”, they proppably mean both since Hitsugaya’s Zanpakutou is of the ice type. The other part of his name “shiro(u)” means white, which most proppably reffers to his hair color.

• Personality description

Hitsugaya can be characterized as somewhat of a take-charge type of character in Bleach. He is one of the most serious and responsible captains, far surpassing his own age maturity. He cares for Hinamori very much which is why he threatens to kill Gin if Hinamori would spill any blood and when he goes beserk on Aizen when he finds Hinamori assumingly dead. Because he’s still young some people call him “Shorty” which is something that can also get him angry but people have learned to stopped calling him this because they value their live. The only person he can endure this from is Hinamori. In his everyday-life he has a cold attitude and is on the silent type. He has also a mysterious aura about him because he always seems to be thinking about something and little is known about his past.

• Character history

When he was still a boy Hinamori endearingly refers to him as Whitey-chan. At that moment in time as Hinamori was working to become a Shinigami, Hitsugaya thought nothing of it because all he wanted was to eat watermelon and for Hinamori to stop calling him Whitey-chan. She told him that if he could be at the same level as she was then she would stop calling him Whitey-chan, but Hitsugaya had no intrest of joining the Sinigami. It is unknown how or why he actually got into the academy, and rose to a captain level, considering Hinamori joined way, way before him, but nontheless, Hitsugaya is considered a genius and is now captain of the 10th Division, Hitsugaya is the youngest member of the Gotei 13, and wields the most powerful ice type Soul Slayer, Hyourinmaru.

What happens between that time is unknown, the next intel there is of him is when Ichigo’s group enters Sou Society and we see him after a captain’s meeting is over and he’s overhearing Aizen and Ichimaru. Aizen at first started to suspect Ichimaru of some evil plot development, quickly forcing Hitsugaya to catch on, until he became even more suspicious than Aizen. He acts on his suspicions warning Hinamori to watch out for the 3th division, espessialy Ichimaru, and also says to not let Aizen out of her sight. Hitsugaya’s suspicions seemingly turn into reality when Hinamori wakes up from a night spent at Aizen’s place to discover that he is not there and rushes off to a Vice Captain meeting. She takes a shortcut only to arrive on time to witness Aizen’s corpse situated on a wall with a sword pierced through his upper abdomen causing a trail of blood to run down the entire wall behind him. The situation goes from bad to worse as Ichimaru arrives and Hinamori attempts to attack him because he appeared to be the most likely suspect in this brutal murder. Kira jumps in to protect his superior from Hinamori’s emotional outburst but Hitsugaya intervenes before the two can truely injure eachother. He has them both arrested and makes the threat to Gin that if he makes Hinamori spill one drop of blood, he’ll be breathing his last breath. While Hinamori is in jail Matsumoto pays her a visit and hands her a letter addressed to her from Aizen, Hitsugaya found the letter in Aizen’s quarters and it turned out to be what he was scribing the night that Hinamori paid him a visit. Out of respect for Hinamori’s feelings he hadn’t turned in the letter as possibly murder evididence and also didn’t read the contents. But the letter held a warning of things to come and also reveals the schemes and plots of a certain someone among The Gotei 13.

After Aizen's death, Hitsugaya was dead bent on believing that Ichimaru killed him, and that he is up to no good at all. During the absence of the leaders of 5th Squad, Hitsugaya takes over their business and paperwork with the help of Matsumoto Rangiku, his Vice Captain. As they are settled in the Administrative Office word comes from one of their officers that Hinamori has escaped and they suspect that she is hunting down Ichimaru. Hitsugaya first goes to check out Kira’s holding cell which wasn’t forced open from the incide which meant someone let him out. He then rushes to the 3th division headquarters and finds Ichimaru together with Kira there on the roofs. Before he can attack Hinamori arrives and says she finally found him, and draws her sword but points it at Hitsugaya. Hinamori tells him what Aizen wrote in the letter; that he, Hitsugaya Toushirou, was the one that murdered Aizen. And then there is a face off between Hitsugaya, Hinamori, and Ichimaru. Hinamori attacks Toushirou as she whole-heartedly believed everything that Aizen wrote because she idolized the man for most of her Shinigami career. Hitsugaya strikes his confused friend in order to avoid further turmoil and then seeks to keep to his word of killing Gin if he ever made Hinamori spill blood. They fight with there regular Zanpakutous for a while but after a while Hitsugaya releases his Zanpakutou and continues the fight. The fight ceases when Rangiku appears after feeling the reiatsu of Hitsugaya’s shikai and stops Gin’s attack on Hinamori’s unconscious body. After this Gin simply walks away and says it’s better for them to treat Hinamori’s injuries then to fight him.

The letter was completely false as it depicted Hitsugaya as the one plotting to destroy Soul Society with the Soukyoku. At this instance Rukia’s execution had been frequently moved up until it will finally take place within 29 hours. Hitsugaya realizes that he needs to take action and he and Matsumoto quickly move to try and prevent the execution by trying to convince Central 46 Chambers (judgement descision system) to look into this matter before executing Rukia. But when they arrived there at the entrance there were no gate guards and even after cutting down the automated defense the alarm doesn’t sound off which shows something is wrong. As they enter they find al the doors unlocked and when they enter the main room they find the 46 members of the Central 46 Chambers brutally murdered. On closer inspection they find out that the people in there were dead for some time since the blood was already dried up and starting to get a black tint, then they see Kira on top of the stairs but he runs away but Hitsugaya and Rangiki immediatly chase him. During the chase Kira advices to check on Hinamori since she wasn’t in he barriered cell anymore but stealthy chasing Hitsugaya, Hitsugaya leaves Kira to Rangiku while he turns back to look for Hinamori. When he reaches the living quarters of Central 46 he sees Ichimaru and to a great shock Aizen who is still alive. He then learns Aizen and Ichimaru were partners from even before he joined the Gotei 13 and that Aizen simply used Hinamori as a pawn. Hitsugaya uses shunpo to flash past the two villains into the buolding behind them and finds Hinamori, Hitsugaya believes she’s dead and goes into a rage and immediatly releases his bankai and assaults Aizen head on but Hitsugaya was cut down in one strike. Luckily for him, Unohana was there to treat him and Hinamori after Aizen left.

A few days later, when Ichigo and his crew arrived back on earth, Hitsugaya, Rangiku, Renji, Rukia, Ikkaku and Yumichika were sent on an important undercover mission to earth to aid Ichigo and his crew against the oncoming threat of the arrancar. Hitsugaya learns how the hiearchy is set up by Aizen in Hueco Mundo by an over-talkative Arrancar named Qu Fong Shaw Long who meets his end by Hitsugaya’s bankai. After a few days he faces off another arrancar, espada class, and gets heavily injured but because Hitsugaya had enough time he was revived by using the water in the atmosphere which can allow him to revive him infinite times as long as he is conscious and has a bit of time. He then defeats the arrancar by using his Ice Prison technique but is unable to finish him off. The next day Hitsugaya learns that the arrancar that were sent the previous day were just a diversion so that Aizen could kidnap Inoue, and although they want to rescue her they receive orders to return to Soul Society.
