• Name Meanings

Byakuya has a very interesting name. Kuchiki literally means "rotting tree." The verb kuchiru aside from meaning to rot, can also mean to die forgotten, or unknown to the world. An odd but perhaps fitting name for a shinigami?

'Byaku' is the kanji for white, and 'ya' (which can also be read "suke") is a typical ending for a boy's name.

• Personality Description

At first glance, he seems like a cold hearted and strict person. He does not smile nor show much emotions. His emotionless personality is probably due to the fact that he is noble so he feels superior from everyone else. He believes that it is his responsibility as a noble to be a perfect role model for the rest of the shinigami, therefore his devotion in following the rules are high. There are a view occasions though where he is out of character, such as marrying Hisana and adopting Rukia which he considers an execption

• Character History

In Soul Society , Byakuya ,aside from being captain of the 6th squad of the Gotei 13 ,is also the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki family. He shows his nobility by wearing a white headpiece called Kenseikaan; only worn by Kuchiki nobles, and a white scarf called Ginpaku Kazahana no Uzuginu that has been past down from generations to the head of the family.Throughout the history of the Kuchiki Family,Byakuya is said to be the most powerful of all the generations.Not much is really known about his past except for the fact that he was married to Hisana and his senpai was Jushiro Ukitake. It is also known that he became Captain about 50 years ago, before the bleach storyline. For training when he was younger, he also often played shunpo tag with Yoruichi, presumably to train, though he never was able to beat her.

His first appearance in the anime/manga is when he accompanies Renji to the real world to retrieve Rukia back to Soul Society. Over there ,he oversees the battles between Renji and Ichigo , when things start getting tough for Renji ,He steps in and takes Ichigo out with one strike using his shunpo (flash-step).

Later on he is seen attending the 13 captain squad meetings where the ryoka/intruder descion meetings were being held.
After quite some time we get to see him greet Ganju and Hanatarou at Rukia's cell, where they came to rescue her.But since he feels himself necessary to uphold the law he prevents anyone from escaping there alive.Ganju tries fighting against Byakuya ,but loses miserably .Before Byakuya finishes Ganju off , the 13th squad captain (Ukitake Jyuushiro) stops him. A few minutes later Ichigo shows up and duels him , when Byakuya gets angry with Ichigo's attitude he opts to kill him before Ichigo's ego goes to his head ,so he prepares to release his Zanpakuto (Senbonzakua) ,but is interuppted by Youroichi. There he tries to prevent Yourouchi from getting away with Ichigo through a flash step ,kind of battle ,but loses. Youroichi then tells Byakuya to give her three days to make Ichigo stronger than him and then leaves. Byakuya who's now lost all interest in the reason to which he came to Rukia's cell leaves everything up to Ukitake.

2 days later, Rukia's trial was being held at the Sokokyu hill ,Byakuya goes to attend it.But before the exection can be carried out Ichigo intervenes once again ,this time pushing back the Sokokyu and destroying the frame that holds rukia in place both of which have a power of a million zanpakuto's ,Byakuya then fights Ichigo to prevent him as well as his sister from escaping from the hill alive, through a series of flash steps ;Byakuya comes to understand that Ichigo has become a bit moire powerful so he decides to release his Zanpakuto's Shikai (Initial Release) ,but after much irritation due to Ichigo's constant questioning of Byakuya to release his Bankai; Byakuya goes ahead and uses it, Ichigo tries to dodge the senbonzakura kageyoshi but can't keep up with it's speed and gets hurt real bad , Ichigo then releses his own bankai , After a few minutes of fighting it becomes apparent to Byakuya that it is impossible for him to win like this,so he uses his Bankai's second form ,Senkei Senbonzakura Kageyoshi (Scene of a massacre). This form does not affect Byakuya's speed but removes all the defensive power that the original form of his bankai had.

During this battle ,Ichigo starts losing but just before he gets killed the hollow within Ichigo appears and starts winning against Byakuya. Ichigo then regained control of himself and takes posession of his body again. Byakuya and Ichigo ,both who are now pushed to thier limits decide to end this duel in a last ,final attack .Byakuya releases his secret technique ,hakuteiken (white imperial sword), and goes all out in a last attempt to kill ichigo. After both swords clash , it turns out that Byakuya lost ,in return for losing ; Byakuya tells Ichigo the reson why he still wants to kill his sister, the reason being that he ,himself being one of the four noble houses was obliged to follow the rules , he used to think of this as his reason for being the leader of the Kuchiki family as well as being an example to all other shinigami. Byakuya then leaves Sokokyu hill with a flash step, claiming Ichigo winner.

Later on ,after the events of Aizen and the other traitors are relesed to the public ,Byakuya shows up on the Sokokyu hill to save rukia ,preventing her from getting killed ,but instead takes the sword aimed at her unto himself.After Aizen and the other traitors leave to Hueco Mundo ,Byakuya apologizes to Rukia for not having tried to save her and tells her all about why she was taken into the Kuchiki clan (this was due to Hisana's dying wishes), he also explains that twice before he had broken the Kuchiku family rules by marrying Rukia's sister (Hisana) and by letting Rukia enter the Kuchiki clan. After he had broken these two rules he had promised on his parents graves that he would never again break the family rules.

Around a month later ,when the bount entered soul society, Rukia starts losing in a fight against one of the bount (Yoshi , the woman who's doll is a fan and a sword) before Yoshi could perform her finishing move on Rukia , Byakuya used his Shikai to take down the bount and save Rukia. Due to this incident ,Byakuya gets angered and goes to hunt down the Bount leader , Kariya , he meets him near the forest in Kusajishi (North part of Rukongai) .There he duels Kariya in a one on one duel using his shikai late into the fight, later when ichigo interuppts .Byakuya lets Ichigo go into Bankai and allows him to take on Kariya , in the meanwhile using his bankai . Byakuya then starts attacking Kariya with a harder and stronger force ,ignoring ichigo. In the middle of thier Bankai duel ,a mysterious person called Ran'Tou appears , the duel continues on after the talk between Kariya and her.

At this point now both Byakuya and Ichigo can penetrate through Kariya's wind barrier , Kariya who now sees defeat in sight is saved by a fellow bount , Koga and his doll , Daraku. After the both of them (Kariya and Koga) escape .Byakuya feels no need to be there ,he starts to go look for the bount from scratch.
